It’s not surprising that Kieran Hebden’s first foray into music was in a post-rock band (the mostly unnoticed and unappreciated Fridge) because the predominant question asked by There Is Love In You is ‘what is genre?’ Although it might seem strange to describe the album's blend of electronic drums, hip-hop samples, jazz and dance as unified, everything on There is Love In You speaks of the artist operating with a very defined agenda. There has been a disturbing trend in live indie music for some time; the spectator fan. As disposable incomes rise, many have flocked to absorb the cultural cachet that seeing gigs by relatively obscure bands provides, irrespective of actually liking the band. This tends to create pockets of ill-mannered fools at gigs shouting conversations while Sufjan Stevens sings ‘Casimir Pulanski Day’, much to the chagrin of those who had to save money to attend.
