The comforting and seductive sounds of electro pop and a soothing voice in So This Is Goodbye command the mind into a state of relaxation. The body will desire to do nothing but lay, sit, or lounge about, as the placid beats and electronic synth swirl through the head, up to the control panel, and turn off the function switch. It is subdued, and soft: music that invites visions of Benjamin Braddock floating aimlessly in his pool, with no anxiety or inhibitions, rather than visions of a crazed nightclub filled with glow sticks.
The album carries with it a feel that it would be best listened to either in a room of lava lamps, or while just sitting around in the sun, having a quiet cocktail or two with friends. Hypnotising synthesizers, and versatile beats mixed with Jeremy Greenspan’s calming voice are the reason this has occurred.
The sound of Junior Boys is quite new to me, but I don’t mind taking the time to chill out every once in a while, and So This Is Goodbye is proficient in aiding relaxation.
The feeling created by the music may be relaxing, but the sadness seeps from some of the lyrics: “This creature of pain has found me again.” Greenspan mixes emotional lyrics like these with the glorious mixture of sounds to add another layer to this album. A layer that shows that So This Is Goodbye isn’t just enjoyable, but that it is also heartfelt and personal. The mind doesn’t completely block out the outside world while in a coma, as it also pays attention to the lyrics. Junior Boys show that this could never be anything like music used for dance. It contains too much emotion and consideration, challenging the mind as well as soothing it.
‘In The Morning’ causes the body to come out of its tranquil state, but it is a delight, as the upbeat electro sounds assisted by Greenspan’s ear-friendly voice encourage the body to become animated. The listener is asked to move about and have a good time, and the frame of mind is one of bliss and contentment. ‘In The Morning’ is the one song on this album that could really be a dance track, but even though it is upbeat and invites movement, this movement would probably be best outside while sipping on those cocktails, rather than in the room of the glowing stick.
‘FM’ is the best track on the album. It squiggles and sways softly, the use of synth sounding fresh and original. As the easy-going electro beats assisting Greenspan in the background start to rise and fill the song with melodic bliss the play count will pass the numbers of all tracks previous. Greenspan’s voice is the most seductive instrument and it puts the listener into one more trance before it all ends.
While listening to So This Is Goodbye, it will feel like the eyes actually will want to say goodbye, as the eyelids desire nothing but closing and the head nothing but shutting down. If you make it through the entire album then you will find tracks that stay with you while you sleep afterwards – when too many cocktails have taken effect. Everyone needs relaxation time and the music of Junior Boys acts as a good sedative.
