Andrew Bird LIVE! - 24th Jan, 2007

If 2007 is just, Andrew Bird will do for whistling what Donn Reynolds, arguably the world’s greatest yodeller, did for his art.

A one man show, Bird steps on pedals that magically loop violin parts, layers voice with xylophone and does strange things with rhythm. Put simply, he offers a mightily impressive and generous sound. If you close your eyes, you’d expect to see three maybe, four people up on the tiny Northcote stage, but there is only one slightly eccentric and quietly comedic entertainer.

Opening with a spatter of songs from the 2005 album: The Mysterious Production Of Eggs, Bird’s delightful caricatures come alive via close, energetic performances.

Playing ‘Nervous Tick Motion Of The Head To The Left’, Bird is all theatrics: twitching and grimacing like an over-excited teenager on glue and petrol. ‘Sovay’ is also displayed for the indulgence of the audience. Its swirling sound and dreamy Buckley-esque vocal drama well received.

A slew of new material from Armchair Apocrypha (due 20th March) is then unveiled. These live renditions promise a sound faithful to Bird’s instrumental tradition and, while it is hard to know what other album nuances await, these new songs seem steeped in the same intimate narration that made The Mysterious Production Of Eggs such a revelation.
