After just one album, major label EMI have terminated their recording contract with London Punkers The Sex Pistols.
Signing with the label after a showcase in 1976, The Sex Pistols released their only single on the label 'Anarchy In The U.K.' and it was as a last minute fill in for label mates Queen on the London only television show Today with Bill Grundy where the label finally had enough of the band's antics. Johnny Rotten said "shit" a number of times during the live broadcast and in response to an invitation from host Grundy, guitarist Steve Jones "you dirty fucker... what a fucking rotter".
It was apparently swearing and spitting at Heathrow that was the final straw that led to EMI released the band from their contract.
In a statement made by the label the company have said that "EMI feels it is unable to promote this group's records in view of the adverse publicity generated over the past two months."
The band's manager Malcolm McLaren told the BBC when questioned about the dumping: "That's rubbish. I haven't signed a single paper - as far as I'm concerned, we're still on EMI."
